what considerations should i make when choosing which ceiling medallion to purchase?
You should consider the decor style of the room the medallion is to be installed in, the size of your light fixture and of the room itself, the colors and any additional lighting in the room. Generally speaking, the larger a room, the larger the medallion should be, but proportionate also to the size of the fixture. With regard to the colors, decor style, and lighting in the room, you will want to choose a medallion that complements your decor style and color scheme, and that will look appropriate with the amount of lighting in the room. You will also want to give attention to the light fixture itself, and select a medallion that has an inner hole size [ID] just smaller than the diameter of the fixture's canopy plate that fits against the ceiling. If the fixture is close to the ceiling, you also need to make sure that the projection of the medallion [P], is less than the distance from the ceiling to the top of the fixture.
How should my medallion be installed?
I recommend having a professional contractor install your medallion, but whoever does it should use adhesives and caulks rather than simply nailing or screwing the medallion to the ceiling. This would be to avoid damaging the hand painted finish. If screws or nails must be used, they should be small, and placed at an angle inwardly around the outside edges of the medallion. Then the edges can be caulked the color of the ceiling after all adhesives are dry.
Are the medallions heavy?
No, all of the medallions I sell are made from polyurethane, and are very light, weighing no more than a couple of pounds.
